Unveiling “Hack Your Health”: A Registered Dietitian’s Expert Review

by | Apr 29, 2024

Since the release of Netflix’s latest documentary “Hack Your Health” I’ve received several messages to provide some feedback on my thoughts as a functional gut health registered dietitian who has worked with thousands of people with gut issues.

And to be honest as a registered dietitian with expertise in gut health, I couldn’t wait to dive into this documentary and share my thoughts on its content, accuracy, and potential impact on viewers.

Let’s start with this, “Hack Your Health” delves into various alternative approaches to health, including biohacking, gut health optimization, and personalized nutrition. Throughout the documentary, viewers are introduced to a range of practices, from intermittent fasting and microbiome testing to supplementation and lifestyle adjustments.

One of the central themes of the documentary revolves around gut health and its profound impact on overall well-being. Viewers are taken on a journey to understand the intricate relationship between the gut microbiome, digestion, immunity, and mental health. Interviews with leading experts in the field provide valuable insights into how our dietary choices influence the composition of our gut bacteria and, subsequently, our health.

As a registered dietitian specializing in gut health, I found many aspects of “Hack Your Health” to be insightful, especially for those who may be new to the gut health world. The documentary does an excellent job of explaining complex scientific concepts in a digestible manner, making it accessible to viewers with varying levels of knowledge about nutrition and biology. Also, I found the visuals to be simple and truthful in their representation of how food is digested specifically fiber-containing foods vs non-fiber foods.

One of the highlights for me was the emphasis on the importance of diversity in the gut microbiome. The documentary effectively communicates how diverse gut bacteria contribute to better health outcomes and offers practical tips for enhancing microbial diversity through dietary changes. And what is the one thing I PREACH about? FIBER,FIBER, and did I mention, FIBER?

However, while “Hack Your Health” presents a wealth of valuable information, it’s important to approach certain topics with caution. Some of the practices suggested in the documentary, such as extreme fasting regimens or unguided supplementation, may not be suitable for everyone and could potentially have adverse effects, especially without proper guidance from healthcare professionals.

Also, “reversing” gut damage is different for everyone and should be approached with either a functional gut health registered dietitian of a naturopathic doctor (ND) who specializes in gut health, not by googling answers as a wrong approach can lead to further damage.

Sometimes this means that a probiotic can cause harm before good. Yes, this happens and many people are not aware.

Furthermore, while personalized nutrition based on gut microbiome testing shows promise, it’s still an emerging field with limited scientific consensus. Viewers should be aware that while personalized approaches may be beneficial for some, they are not a one-size-fits-all solution.

My Key Takeaways as a functional gut health registered dietitian :
1. Focus on Gut Health: The documentary effectively highlights the importance of gut health and its impact on overall well-being. As a dietitian who spends all her time learning about gut health, I can tell that all diseases do start in the gut, it’s simply true.

2. Diverse Dietary Approach: Meaning, meet your fiber goal!!! Encouraging a diverse diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and legumes is crucial for promoting a healthy gut microbiome. Remember, fiber serves as a prebiotic and prebiotics FEED your gut microbes. If your gut microbes are not fed well with fiber, they do start to eat you (as discussed in the documentary) and that can lead to a leaky gut.

3. Proceed with Caution: Viewers should exercise caution when considering extreme practices like fasting or unguided supplementation and seek advice from healthcare professionals such as registered dietitian nutritionists.

4. Personalized Nutrition: While personalized nutrition based on gut microbiome testing is intriguing, it’s still an evolving field and should be approached with caution. Most should aim for a high-fiber diet however certain conditions such as irritable bowel disease (IBD) and diverticulitis should be extremely careful about how they approach their fiber intake as it can worsen the condition. Again, I highly recommend investing in your health and working with a dietitian for individualized care.

“Hack Your Health” offers valuable insights into alternative approaches to health and wellness, with a particular focus on gut health optimization. As a registered dietitian, I appreciate the documentary’s efforts to educate and empower viewers to take control of their health.

However, it’s essential to approach the information presented with a critical eye and seek guidance from qualified professionals when making significant changes to diet or lifestyle. Overall, “Hack Your Health” serves as a thought-provoking exploration of cutting-edge health practices, inspiring viewers to consider new ways of approaching their well-being.
